Coffee Trees Begin a New Chapter as Wooden Pens
Coffee, a beverage we drink daily.
Perhaps surprisingly, few people have actually touched a "coffee tree," which cultivates the beans.
At Wood Time Factory, we craft wooden pens from coffee trees that have served for many years on Vietnamese coffee plantations and have completed their role.
These trees once bore countless coffee beans, supporting people's lives. We inherit that time and transform them into new pens.
What is a coffee tree?
The coffee tree is an evergreen plant belonging to the genus Coffea in the family Rubiaceae. It originated in Ethiopia and is now widely cultivated in warm regions such as Brazil, Vietnam, and Colombia. The coffee beans we drink daily are the seeds of the red fruits (coffee cherries) that grow on this tree.
As timber, it is also known as "Coffee Wood," and in recent years, there has been a growing trend to repurpose coffee trees that have completed their life cycle into furniture and other goods.
Coffee trees do not bear fruit all year round.
After about 20-30 years, their yield gradually decreases, and many trees are replaced with new seedlings.
Trees that have nurtured many fruits on the plantation complete their role.
When viewed as lumber, the harvested wood exhibits beautiful grain and unique characteristics.
At Wood Time Factory, we transform these trees into wooden pens, hoping to give them a new purpose once again.
What I felt when actually carving it
When I first started carving coffee wood, I was somewhat expecting it to smell like coffee.
However, it actually has very little scent.
Instead, what left an impression was its smooth, white grain.
The feel of the blade on the wood is pleasant, making the process of carving each pen very enjoyable.
As a coffee lover myself, I craft these pens thinking, "This tree has borne coffee beans for a long time."
Unique Grain for Each Pen
Being natural wood, no two grain patterns are exactly alike.
The shades of color and the flow of the grain reflect the time each tree has spent growing.
While initially light in color, the pen deepens in hue with use, gradually changing its appearance.
It will age with its owner, developing into a one-of-a-kind wooden pen.
From the Tree's Time to Your Time
Coffee trees have long histories of nurturing beans and supporting people's lives.
Once their purpose is fulfilled, these trees begin a new chapter as "writing instruments."
When you write your schedule in your planner.
When you write a letter to someone important.
